About Us

HISTORY

1992 Doctor Juan Tapia-Mendoza founded the Pediatrics 2000 group.

He was soon joined by a new generation of medical providers dedicated to working in underserved urban communities.

In January, 1993, Pediatrics 2000 opened its doors at 150 Street and Broadway in West Harlem, NY a federally designated health shortage community plagued with a high prevalence of asthma, teen pregnancy, obesity, and behavioral problems.

Pediatrics 2000 introduced the concept of a private Pediatric group practice to the neighborhood and was the first open access clinic for a Medicaid eligible population in the area.

It was the first clinic of its kind to treat acute asthma attacks with medicines administered via nebulizer instead of the traditional asthma injections known for its side effects and limitations. Pediatrics 2000 was the first privately owned center to offer Medicaid patients in the neighborhood a walk-in urgent pediatric care facility with the ability to provide treatment for dehydration and the febrile infant.

It was also the first health center in Washington heights to offer Medicaid patients a place where kids could get a same-day, walk- in physical exam, immunizations, screening for audio/visual problems and the laboratory work necessary to complete a school form - all in just one visit.

Over the years, Pediatrics 2000 has partnered with major community institutions including the National Health Service Corps to support and continue to advance primary care in underserved  areas, promote educational programs to improve health literacy, foster medical research and pro bono work.

Pediatrics 2000 has been featured in the New York Times, NBC, CBS, Telemundo,Univision, national networks as well as ABC channel-7, The Fox channel 5 local news, El Diario la Prensa, The Amsterdam News and 'New Yorker Of The Week' by NY-1 News, among other media coverage.

Pediatrics 2000 currently has 4 sites and over 100,000 patient visits per year. Dr. Tapia operates the 207th Street and 150th Street locations; the Haven and South Bronx locations are independently operated.

In 2008 the Pediatrics 2000 group was the first in its area to incorporate Electronic Medical Records into its practice and among the pioneers in valuing the concept of the Patient Centered Medical Home in a Pediatric practice.
